This Calgary-based firm introduced its healthy workplace initiative in 2003. One of this year’s highlights was a “Trim up for Christmas Challenge” which runs for 3 months and provides information from a nutritionist on smart eating, portion sizes, reading labels, and activity for weight loss. Through their program, the greatest impact has been in the reduction of injury and absences. In 2003 they had a total of 110 medical aid injuries and 13 lost time injuries with 300 lost time days. By 2006, these numbers had been reduced significantly to 75 reportable injuries with their lost time injuries at zero.
The changed cafeteria menu has also resulted in dramatic changes in employees diets. Adding heart healthy foods to their cafeteria menu changed the diets of many employees dramatically. ½ orders, recently introduced are now very popular, and one employee who previously weighted in over 300 pounds is not tipping the scale at 189. Comments can be heard such as “I don’t even want the greasy fries anymore that I used to crave.” This is a wonderful example of the impact a workplace wellness program can have. Strong senior management support and participation have helped to make this program a success.
